THE GRANDPARENT'S NAME DEBATE

BOOMERS ARE GIVING ‘GRANDMA’ AND ‘GRANDPA’ A WHOLE NEW IMAGE REQUIRING THE PERFECT NAME

By Darcy Alvey

Baby boomers are faced with dilemmas every day, from retirement during tough economic times to shrinking social security funds. However, few issues torment boomers as much as the daunting task of naming themselves on the cusp of becoming a grandparent.

Grandma or Granny? Papa or Granddaddy? The Wall Street Journal, a renowned publication that covers hard-hitting news, recently usurped coverage of bailouts and 401Ks with a lengthy, front page article on the great grandparent name debate. Wall Street Journal reporter Ann Zimmerman introduced the stories of Glamma, Coco and Papa Doc and explored many of the reasons boomers opt for alternative monikers. This generation of grandparents is unlike any other. They do not want their role as grandparent to be the old, homey, onlooker that traditional names imply. Instead, boomers want unique names that won’t age them, that put some personality into the role and that embody their hands-on, youthful approach.

Lauren Charpio, author of You Can Call Me Hoppa!, A Grandparent’s Guide to Choosing a Name that Fits, understands this struggle. After experiencing the grueling naming process with her own parents, Charpio wrote this first of its kind helpful guide, which explores a modern array of hundreds of grandparent names, and dozens of real-life stories organized as Traditional Titles and Cultural Appellations to names that are Perfectly Personal and those that so preciously come Out of the Mouths of Babes.

Charpio recently began working on the second edition of the book, which features more names and inspiring and humorous anecdotes about how grandparent names come to be. She found that in writing You Can Call Me Hoppa! the background behind the names was even more interesting than the names themselves, though there wasn’t enough room to include them all.

This is where you, the once tormented, name-seeker can share the tale of your journey to the perfect grandparent name. Charpio is looking to fill her pages with your unique story. For more information or to share your story visit www.callmehoppa.com.

You Can Call Me Hoppa! The Grandparents Guide to Choosing a Name that Fits retails for $24.95 and is available at www.callmehoppa.com,www.Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and specialty retailers.

Lauren Charpio was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. She attended the University of San Diego, and some time spent at Oxford in England inspired a fascination with all things global. She started her career in international banking but longed to flex her creative muscle. She later attended Thunderbird School of Global Management, where she received the master’s in International Management that ultimately facilitated a career change to marketing and brand strategy. The shift that affected her life the most was the one from singleton, to wife, to working mother of two—a shift made easier with the help of two sets of doting first-time grandparents who longed for fitting names…
