In “The Wacky World of Laws” Jeff Isaac, known throughout Southern California as “The Lawyer in Blue Jeans,” has put together a fascinating compendium of national and international laws that are more than surprising, some are downright unbelievable.
Did you know, for instance, that in Delaware it’s against the law to pawn a wooden leg? Or that if you’re going to move a bear down a highway in Missouri, it must be in a cage?
In California, a state that prides itself on being the wackiest of all, it’s unlawful for either sex to fake an orgasm. In Carmel, women may not wear high heels in the city limits and, until Clint Eastwood became mayor, it was illegal to eat ice cream on a public sidewalk.
In addition to mind-altering laws, each state’s entry includes “official state things.” Delaware, for example, has an official beverage—milk. In New Jersey, where it’s against the law to make faces at enforcement personnel, the official state animal is the horse. It’s unlawful to arrest a dead man in New Mexico, and the official aircraft is a hot air balloon.
The 190-page book is a fun and enlightening read, best shared with a friend. (LawyerInBlueJeans, Inc.; $16.95)
