Here’s how to go green, go often and go any time of year.

If your “greenie” neighbors look down their nose, overlook their ignorance. While traveling in an RV you are heating and cooling a space eight feet wide and 20 to 30 feet long while your electric and gas meters at home are hardly moving. In RV camping you’re cooking outdoors, making do with minimal equipment, taking “navy” showers, and hiking, climbing, skiing or boating instead of hunkering in front of a big-screen TV with mega-watt sound. You can find the great outdoors, and a complete change of scene, within half a tank or less from your home. Best of all, you’re calling your own shots by traveling and sleeping in your own, snug, self-contained home.

Tips for green RV travel
• On a map, draw circles around your city so you can look up all the campgrounds that lie within, say, 30 to 100 miles away. Check out whether they are open all year, their facilities, activities, special events and location. You may prefer one campground in winter because of its great ski runs or snowshoe trails and another in August for its corn maze and hayrides.

• Double the fun by saying, “Let’s go,” to other RV owners.

• Go green by strictly observing each campground’s rules. At one time, it was okay to put gray water on the ground. Now that’s verboten. No longer can you tie dogs or clotheslines to trees. That could damage bark
