For Lena Holmes, psychological and financial abuse resulted in years of turmoil for her and her family. Her niece caregiver, Milder Asep, documents her family’s story of stopping a conman who nearly destroyed Aunt Lena’s remaining years. Her book, Injustice to the Elderly, is a cautionary tale of how easily seniors can be victims of abuse.
Asep documents her family’s tumultuous account of overthrowing Aunt Lena’s conman. Today, 14 years after it all began, Asep still waits for the legal case to be settled.
THE STORY
After her husband died, Lena Holmes lived alone and received frequent visitors. She was capable of taking care of herself, even through the early stages of Alzheimer’s. It was not until her neighbor, Cay, entered her life that she lost all of her independence, fortunes and dignity, says the author.
Cay lived with his bedridden wife. He spent his days at Aunt Lena’s home, answering her phone calls, driving her to her relatives’ houses and making her decisions. Cay methodically took over Lena’s finances, assigning himself Power of Attorney and manipulating her into signing the legal documents. He took out loans against her house, seized her bank accounts and regulated her contact with family. When his wife died, Cay married Lena and moved forward with taking her for everything she was worth.
After 14 years of ongoing court battles, after both Lena Holmes and Cay have passed away. Mildred Asep’s case remains open.
